How to Correctly Test Bar Straightness

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Brian Grisez with Edge Technologies. Today I’m going to show you how to correctly test bar straightness for bar fed material applications. If you’re experiencing significant bar vibration or part finish issues, one thing you can look at that’s very simple is your material straightness. Material straightness in your bar fed turning application is very important. and has a pretty tight tolerance. The correct way to measure your bar straightness is two VB blocks. Place a 3-ft section of bar on your VB blocks equally spaced approximately 1 ft. Take a dial indicator and simply rotate your bar. looking at the dial indicator to determine the total runout of material as you rotate it. The specifications for good material straightness is 20,000 of an inch runout per 3ft section of bar. Anything within that specification is a good straight bar. Outside of that specification, you have a potential for bar vibration caused by the lack of straightness of the material. When you’re measuring the bar, you want to be sure to measure three points of this material, each end and the middle. Again, looking for no greater than 20,000 of an inch of run out on your 3-ft bar of material.
